Danielle Park WisemanAs the world we know is caught in our fast-paced environment, fueled by Western world’s unrealistic quest to strive for perfection, Canadian painter Robert Rahal uses the circle to liberate himself from the disquieting demands of our exasperating culture.
These circle meditations are a symbolic metaphor that recognizes the beauty in humble simplicity. Although the circle is mathematically synonymous to perfection, Rahal’s wabi-sabi process casts light on the importance of restraint, modesty, and spirituality. These philosophies are visual reminders to connect back to nature, to be in the present moment, and to appreciate the transient stages of life.
Rahal’s chase to achieve nature’s perfect shape outlines the imperfections of the human condition. Where the circle relies on mathematical exactness, his paintings express the broadening range of humanity. By reflecting on each circle’s beauty from a naturally imperfect world, Rahal recognizes the importance of process. The smell and tone of his pigments coupled with the sounds of his application mimic an atmosphere of tranquility and harmony. These circle meditations reference the beauty and practical uses of its divine shape. His paintings are inescapably human.

auction piece for Backyard Concert 2019
This was the sixth private concert in a series that started over a decade ago to raise awareness and vital funding that has elevated the UCLA Health Autism Program, launched an impactful teen and young adult cancer program UCLA, and spearheaded the establishment of Teen Cancer America (TCA). In 2019, the UCLA Breast Cancer Program was added as a beneficiary of the concert series. The first five events raised close to $15 million, with event expenses totalling less than 10 percent.
Backyard Concert 2019 carried on this momentum to provide transformative care for kids, teens, young adults, women, and families impacted by the frightening diagnosis of cancer or autism. Support from this event funds a multitude of programs, services, and resources provided by both UCLA Health and Teen Cancer America for these patients.

In honour of this event initiated by Teen Cancer America, the significance of lavender is twofold: to show his support to those diagnosed with cancer and to spread awareness about the disease. The colour is mentally associated with healing, tranquility, and purity. And from a painterly expression, lavender balances the intensity of red and the calm of blue.
At this year's charitable event, Rahal pays tribute to Green Day and merges the band's iconic album cover American Idiot with his art. The artist sees the hand reaching in and squeezing the heart as a metaphor. Together two artists come together to inspire awareness for a great cause by evoking an emotional response. It's time to make a difference. "Are we? We are."
